My Diet Secret: Lord, Will You Be My Potato Chips?
by: Laura Jones

Like many of you, I resolved to be healthier this year - especially when it comes to what I eat. And, unlike most years, I actually have a plan this time:
  • Follow a Weight Watcher-esque meal plan
  • Join Curves this month
  • Start dancing once a week
  • Keep tabs with my buddy who is also working on a healthy diet

I'm even going to buy a knock-out, drop-dead gorgeous dress in a size 10, hang it on the bedroom door as an incentive, and have a party at the end of the year when I can finally wear it.
So far, so good. But when in the course of human events, it becomes one of THOSE days, I like to remember a secret I recently learned.

It had been one of my famous Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day kind of days. (If you haven't read that book, you should!) We had a crisis at work. It was that time of month. I had so much to do over the weekend that feigning a nervous breakdown and signing into Lakeshore looked like a good option.
I WANTED CHOCOLATE AND POTATO CHIPS!!!

Richard is my good friend in England who is a Christian counselor. Lately, he has been encouraging me to enjoy more time with the Lord and also to work on "slimming," as they say over there.

In a fit of frustration, I dashed off an email to him: "I'm not doing well . . . I'm ready to cry and I really want to go eat potato chips and chocolate. PLEASE TELL ME NOT TO!"

Here was his reply -

Oh, Laura - poor you! :(

How about trying this:

Ask Jesus to come and be your chocolate and potato chips, and be expectant and hold out against those two impostors, to give Jesus time to come instead and minister to that place in you that wants them. You will be so pleased if you win this one.

While I was crying at Richard's encouragement and giggling at the preposterousness of comparing Almighty God to potato chips, I remembered a scene from What Women Want. Mel Gibson is pacing around his house, pining for the girl he loves. He goes to grab a snack, and then jumps back muttering, "What am I doing? She's not in the refrigerator!"

I had an "Aha!" moment: I was doing the same thing - looking for God in my 'fridge. What I wanted from the chocolate and potato chips was exactly what Jesus wanted to be for me- Himself. And He wasn't in the refrigerator!

I wanted a sweet, comforting treat to relieve the stress. Something pleasant. Something that made me feel special. Check this out. Jesus says:

"Taste and see that [I am] good..."

"Come unto Me ... and ye shall find rest."

I wanted something salty, crunchy and flavorful - a tangible "pop" in a really bleak weekend. Jesus calls his followers the "salt of the earth" - and since we are to be like Him, it wouldn't be completely un-biblical to call Him salty! How cool is that? Moreover, He wants to be the One to make my life have flavor.

Lord? Will You be my chocolate and potato chips?

Hey that was good! There is some solid Theology surrounding that plate of treats. We truly learn to live when we live by “every Word that proceedeth out of His mouth.”

Thank you!
